Press Release (USS Cole)

The Government of Yemen learned of the sad disaster of the USS Cole in Aden. It is with profound sorrow that the Embassy of Yemen wishes to express its heartfelt condolences to the American government, its people, the victims and their families.

The Government of Yemen takes this matter very seriously. It has received the full attention of the highest levels of government, including the President who has personally visited the injured American sailors receiving medical treatment in Aden Hospital. In response to the situation, all available resources are being mobilized to ensure the injured receive proper medical attention.

Yemen's Government has charged an investigative committee with establishing the nature and causes of this shocking explosion. The committee will be using all available means, and will be working in close collaboration with American investigators who are already in Aden. Though there are predictions in the western media that the explosion may be the result of a terrorist act, the government of Yemen is reserving judgment pending the outcome of the investigation.

Should it be determined that terrorists were responsible for the explosion, Yemen will spare no effort in bringing the perpetrators of such an outrageous crime to justice. As a member of the international community with a firm commitment to international law, Yemen deplores all forms of terrorism, and reiterates its determination to combat terrorism, whether domestic or international.
